Cory & Mada's Wedding -- Folly Beach, SC

This past weekend Kyle and I headed up to Folly Beach, South Carolina for Cory & Mada's wedding. Cory was one of Kyle's mentors at Irwin and they have remained close after our move. Kyle was in the wedding, so we took off Friday for a long wedding-filled weekend. It's always a treat for Kyle and I to travel... we LOVE staying in Marriott's... if I could buy one of those white comforters I would. We always sleep so well without all the animals waking us up :)
Friday while the groomsmen were playing beach volleyball and setting up for the rehearsal, I had some much needed alone-time on the beach. It. Was. Awesome. I even remembered to bring a cooler with drinks and snacks AND a chair to lay in the whole time. Man does that make the "beach experience" better.

They had the wedding rehearsal at 5:45, then headed to the rehearsal dinner at 7:00. Cory's family had rented out a beach house with a huge deck that looked into the marsh... it was beautiful! The food was absolutely delicious, as Cory's uncle started cooking the bbq at 8:00 AM for it. I had a good time getting to meet everyone in the wedding party, all of their friends are really nice.
Man I hate beach hair... in the hotel room it's curled and I step out and it goes immediately straight and stringy.
Saturday morning Kyle met the groomsmen to run more errands for the wedding, while I got to hang out with Molly and Marshal. We were so excited to see them again since it's probably been like 2 months! They split our hotel room with us that last night, so we talked, got ready and headed to the church.
The service was a traditional Catholic Mass, that lasted an hour. Since I wasn't used to that kind of service it did go by fast for me as there are just so many interesting parts. Kyle luckily didn't have to stand the entire time!
Cory's mom has MS and her black lab "Blue" helps calm down her nerves. So Blue even made it to the ceremony, dressed for the occasion of course.
The reception was held at the Marriott where we were staying so we were able to go hang out in our room a little while before cocktail hour started. Molly and I did have this delicious drink with cranberry, orange and pineapple juice in it! There were only 50 people total at the wedding, so Cory and Mada had plenty of time to walk around and talk with their guests, which was so nice. We had a great time dancing and visiting with everyone!
Congratulations Cory & Mada, we hope you have a wonderful time on your honeymoon to Aruba!!

Dad's home!

After finishing another round of radiation (10 sessions) to help with the pain (as we told you about here), my dad was able to checkout of the hospital today! He had been there for 31 days, and my mom had been staying with him the entire time. Our whole family is SO excited to have them home, but I think the doggies are on a whole other level of excitement as you can see in the picture above! Both dogs are actually smiling... haha.

On April 22, a physical therapist brainstormed on his time off how to get dad mobile again. The next day, he brought in this machine that is used to help get people out of their wheelchairs.... and it worked for dad! Here he is showing off "no hands" standing with no leg pain!
On April 26, they got dad up with the machine and walking! He had to retrain his muscles to walk, crazy. The physical therapist even made him do some squats to start warming the muscles up.
By the 28th dad was getting up from the bed, walking, and laying back down all with a walker! What progress he's made so quickly.
They moved his chemo up a day (he has it every Friday normally) so he could check out today and go home. A physical therapist will come to their house 3 times a week to work on strengthening exercises, and then in between dad will work with mom and nick walking and the transition from bed to standing. Love you dad!!
Thank you so much for your prayers, they are working please keep them up!

The Lord is good, a Strength and Stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows those who take refuge and trust in Him. Nahum 1:7

Top 3 Thursday: Bucket List

Today's Top 3 is Things you want to check off your Bucket List!

1) HELI SKIING! This one is obviously Kyle's. The definition of this is: off-trail, downhill skiing that is accessed by a helicopter, not a ski lift. Heliskiing is essentially about skiing in a natural -- albeit highly selected -- environment without the effort or gear compromise required for hiking into these areas as in ski touring or ski mountaineering. (This scares me a lot considering the risk of avalanches, but I'm definitely not going to stop him from doing this... as it's been a dream of his for a really long time!)

2) SKY DIVING! This is one that Kyle and I share. It's probably the only "risky" thing that I haven't said no to yet... if you didn't know by now I am NOT a risk taker :) I do think this would be so cool to experience. We are throwing around the idea of doing it for our 30 birthdays!! (at least I have 3 more years to prepare myself!)

3) WORK IN AN ORPHANAGE. This is one of mine. Before my college graduation I had started researching and filling out applications, but with our engagement and a graphic design job offer it wasn't the right time. I'm still waiting for the right time, but I know I'll make it to Africa or another country some day to love on these sweet sweet kids.
So those are 3 of ours, what are some of yours?
p.s. this actually makes me want to start a list of all the things Kyle and I want to do. There are SO many things!!

Groupon!

I haven't posted on this great find yet, so I wanted to before I forgot! My friend, Jen, introduced me to Groupon (www.groupon.com). Each day, Groupon features an unbeatable deal on the best stuff to do, see, eat, and buy in your city. By promising businesses a minimum number of customers, they provide discounts you won't find anywhere else. It. Is. Awesome.

I bought our first one when I saw House of Lu pop up in my daily email from Groupon! It is a Chinese restaurant that is a block away from our house that we have eaten at multiple times. I bought the Groupon certificate with $10, and in return we got a gift certificate for $25! Nothing makes me happier then getting deals like that!!

Instead of splitting a meal like we normally do we were able to both get meals, drinks and have some for left overs the next day. Awesome!

Here is what my gift certificate looked like:
I have only bought into the deal one other time for a fun restaurant in Atlanta (a date night in the future), but I am always keeping my eye out for other things that might interest us! It's perfect for couples and families for sure. OH and the deals aren't just on restaurants... I've seen sky diving, spas, museums, car washes, dentists... I mean the list goes on and on! Hope you enjoy it as much as we do!!

Kyle's trip to China!

Hey everyone, it's Kyle. A couple of weeks ago I went to China for our annual product line review with Home Depot. It was an eye opening and humbling experience because it made it abundantly clear how insignificant each of us are in the grand scheme of things. To think about going to a country with 1.5 billion people was hard to wrap my head around. The trip over was relatively uneventful except for a 2 minute ordeal when I forgot my suitcase at security in Los Angeles. This could be due to the fact that I had the bright idea to stay up the night before in order to sleep on the plane and be on the correct time schedule once we got to China. Oh and I did see Carlton from Fresh Prince in the airport too.

To give you a rough time line of how long it took to get there we left Atlanta on Monday morning, flew to LA, then from LA to Tokyo and from Tokyo to Hong Kong. Because we flew across the international date line we actually lost an entire day and finally arrived at our hotel at 11:00 pm Tuesday night Hong Kong time (11:00 am Tuesday ATL time). We stayed in Hong Kong the first night, which for those of you that don't now Hong Kong is an amazing city that was a British colony until only a few years ago, therefore it is very clean, sophisticated and modern.

When I finally got to my room it took me a couple minutes to figure out how to turn the lights on (you have to put your room key in a little slot in the wall). I was hoping to lie down on a nice comfortable bed, but I soon realized the beds in Asia are more like sleeping on the floor. The next morning I woke up at 4am which was more sleep than I thought I would get and my boss, Tim, and I had an early breakfast before getting on the ferry to Zhong Shan.

Our hotel was right on top of the ferry terminal so we went downstairs, bought our tickets, and took the 45 minute ferry ride across the Hong Kong harbor to mainland China. We were picked up by one of the employees from our office, named Ming Bo, in Zhong Shan who spoke absolutely no English. Once we got to the office we joined our product manager, director of marketing, industrial designer, and project engineer who had been over there for a week already, preparing for the meeting. We spent the next couple of days getting all of the models, pricing, and presentation ready for our first meeting with Home Depot.

During our time in Zhong Shan we had the opportunity to try some interesting traditional Chinese cuisine (ie shrimp heads, baby octopus, dragon fruit, etc).
On my 3rd day in, I was able to take a tour of one of the factories that we work with. This factory manufacturers over 3.5 million ceiling fans a year and employs over 5,000 people. The buildings total over 300,000 square meters. It was very cool to see everything from glass blowing to precision motor manufacturing to each part of the fan being hand painted. In total there are over 600 steps to build a ceiling fan from start to finish.
After our initial meeting with Home Depot they chose some models to be sent to their corporate office in Shen Zhen. We had Ming Bo drive us the 2 hours to a hotel right next to their office and I really enjoyed the car ride as I got to see a less Americanized part of China.

The night before we left to go to Shen Zen we were in the hotel lobby eating dinner and the Hotel Staff asked us to participate in their Earth Hour celebration. If you are not familiar with Earth Hour it is a world wide commitment to energy conservation. In major cities around the world all the of the largest buildings will turn off all power for 1 hour. The hotel that we were staying at was one of the largest in Zhong Shan and therefore had a great deal of media present for the event. They asked us to hold candles and stand behind their earth hour banner and count down until earth hour began. Once all the lights were turned off photographers came in from everywhere and snapped pictures and we were informed that we were going to be in the newspaper the next day. Sure enough they were right:
Our hotel in Shen Zhen was pretty amazing and cost about what a Fairfield Inn would charge in the US. I was upgraded to a suite with an office, living room, bedroom, 2 bathrooms and an amazing view of downtown. The next couple of days were a lot of "hurry up and wait" because we were at Home Depot's beck and call and were called into meetings as early as 7:30 am and as late as 9:00 at night.
On one of the first day sin Shen Zhen I was getting pretty homesick and missing talking to Leah (it was $2.00 a minute to talk on the phone so our conversations were SHORT), so I went out to the local mall and found a webcam for $20 US. So not only got to talk to her but see her face and talk via Google Chat as much as wanted to for the rest of the trip. Tyson even made a couple appearances on there which was nice.
Once all of the final decisions were made we still had an extra day in China so we decided to head to Macau. We booked rooms at the Venetian hotel, which has the largest casino gaming floor in the world. Because of everyones hard work, we were instructed to have a nice dinner and enjoy ourselves on the last day in China. We had a wonderful dinner, spent some time at the Black Jack and Craps tables (and actually won money!), and even got to play miniature golf on the roof of our hotel with 50-70 yard holes, sand-traps and water hazards.
After our night in Macau we headed to Hong Kong where we were flying out early the next morning. We happened to be there on a Saturday so we got to enjoy the light show on the Hong Kong harbor.

This is a laser light show that they put on every Saturday night set to music and all the sky scrapers in Hong Kong shoot lasers across the harbor. After enjoying some of the Hong Kong nightlife we headed back to our hotel for an early and long flight back to the US.
Overall, I really enjoyed my trip to China and it was interesting to see their quickly developing economy and industrious nature. I could go on for hours about all of the interesting things we saw and experienced so if you are interested to know more let us know.

Baker Yard Sale

A couple weekends ago we held a yard sale for my parents, to help get rid of everything that had been sitting in boxes in the basement for over 5 years. My aunt Sherry and Uncle Bobby drove up all the way from Florida to help... and man did they! Sherry was referred as a "tornado" organizing everything and letting nothing get in her way. It was unbelievable how much they did in a week. Tara, Jamie and Nick spent all their time helping as well, and it was a huge success.
It was hard for my parents not to be there to help sort through everything (my mom has been staying the entire time at the hospital with my dad), but it was such a blessing for progress to still be happening while they were in the hospital.

For anyone that is interested we will be hosting another yard sale/TOOL SALE on May 8th. More details to follow!

Here are a couple pictures of the things for sale!
Thank you to everyone who came by, and a HUGE thanks to Aunt Sherry & Uncle Bobby for coming up to run the yard sale. We don't know what we would have done without you!!

My dad

As many of you know, much has happened in our family since the beginning of 2010. After having considerable back pain last fall and consulting with numerous orthopedic doctors, my Dad went for an MRI on January 4. From that diagnostic test, it was determined that my Dad had "abnormal cells" near his tailbone and underwent a needle biopsy to find out specifically what they were. The abnormal cells were diagnosed as a plasmacytoma, a collection of rapidly dividing plasma cells that attacked his sacrum.

For all of us who are not up on our anatomy, here is a picture of what a normal sacrum (the blue area) looks like:
By the time we discovered the mass in my Dad's sacrum, it had probably been there for at least a year. It was only when the intense back and leg pain began occurring that we realized this mass was present and it had already done considerable damage to his sacrum bone (with some doctors estimating the damage up to 50%). The sacrum is the "root hub" for the nerves of the lower half of your body. (There are 4 holes on either side of the sacrum where all the nerves for your legs run through.) It has also been described as the "cornerstone" for your spine and pelvis.

Dad went through several other medical tests (x-rays, urine tests, and blood screenings) at the end of January to determine if this sacral plasmacytoma was the only location of cancer in his body. (Since this is a blood cancer, it is very rare that it only occurs in one spot.) Following these tests, it was determined that there were also "lesions" on his skull, left femur, and humeri (upper arm bones), and he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.

A sweet church friend had recommended her oncologist to Mom and Dad before we ever found out it was cancer. And it was only through God's provision that we were paired up with him immediately! He is a nationally-renowned oncologist by the name of Dr. Alan Kritz. (A crazy side note is that he was also Kyle's mom oncologist through her fight against breast cancer!) He specializes in blood cancers and we couldn't be more grateful that he is in Raleigh:

Dr. Kritz began treatment immediately. Dad underwent 12 radiation treatments over the course of 3 week time period to begin shrinking the tumor in his sacrum. In addition, he had a portacath put in and began chemotherapy (which will last a total of 4-6 months). Dr. Kritz's "chemo concoction" consists of 3 chemicals which have just recently made great advances in multiple myeloma treatment: Velcade, Thalidomide, and Decadron (steroid). He also gets Aredia (bone strengthener) once a month. Besides being tired and slightly nauseas, Dad has not had any serious adverse reactions to the radiation or chemo- Praise the Lord!

During the month of February, Dad was tired but felt great! The pain was lessening, his blood counts were looking good, and Dr. Kritz was thrilled with his progress.

On March 6, Dad took a misstep going to church. He felt a sharp pain and within an hour was unable to bear weight on his left leg. He began using crutches, but over the course of the next 2 1/2 weeks, Dad had more and more pain as he tried to sit or walk.

On March 29, we made the decision to transport Dad to Rex, where doctors could come to him and treat his pain. By this point, it was absolutely excruciating for him to sit or stand. He met with a neurosurgeon, a neurologist, and a doctor from the pain clinic. They tried putting in a "pain pump," which administered pain medicine directly to Dad's sacrum, but unfortunately, it did not provide any more relief than oral medications. In addition, they have done CT scans, more MRI's and x-rays of his sacrum. The tumor has shrunk (praise the Lord!), but as it decreases, it leaves a void in the sacral bone. Therefore his sacrum is "unstable" and the weight of his upper body is not supported when he tries to sit or stand, pinching the nerves to his legs and causing incredible pain.

It has now been 3 1/2 weeks, and my Dad is still in the hospital. When he is laying down, there is absolutely no pain. However, when he "bends" to sit, it is unbearable due to the pain. Dr. Kritz has started him on 2 more weeks of radiation and Dad is continuing with his chemo while in the hospital. Last week, we did receive some good news: the overall myeloma in his body is greatly decreased...up to 90% gone! (Dad's M-spike was a 2.4 in January, and now it is a 0!) Though this "mechanical problem" of pain in his sacrum is frustrating, we are so grateful that the overall cancer is really responding and is greatly diminished!

Kyle and I finally got the chance to visit dad in the hospital last weekend. He was having a couple rough days with nausea and some kind of bug, but this week he's turned a corner and is feeling much better!

Nick gets right in the bed with dad!

And the Dew kids have helped lift dad's spirits so much!

So many people have asked us about specific things they can be praying for:

  1. For Dr. Kritz' wisdom in treating my Dad.
  2. That the radiation and chemo will fully eradicate the remainder of the tumor in his sacrum, any other "lesions" that he might still have on his bones, as well as the abnormal plasma cells in his blood.
  3. That the pain in my Dad's back and legs will decrease so that he can sit and stand.
  4. That my Dad will gain mobility and be able to come home.
  5. That while he is in the hospital, he will not experience any sickness or complications from laying in bed.
  6. That he will be a candidate for a bone marrow transplant (using his own marrow) at the end of his chemotherapy treatment. (Bone marrow transplants for multiple myeloma patients have proven to have the most long-term lasting effects.)
  7. For strength and grace for my Mom, and the rest of our family, as we walk with my Dad through this journey.

On top of this medical trial, my Dad was terminated from his job just 2 days after finding out the results of the MRI. Our family has had to make some incredibly hard decisions since then, but have determined that it is best for my Mom and Dad to sell their home and move in with my Grandma, which is luckily only 5 minutes down the road.

Please pray for these financial requests as well:

  1. That the company that terminated my Dad would offer him a severance/settlement package of some sort. (At this point, they have given my Dad nothing- no pay, no health insurance, etc. We are grateful for unemployment and Cobra though!)
  2. That my Dad's application for disability will be approved.
  3. That my Mom and Dad's house will sell quickly- We are hoping to have it ready to go on the market by mid-May.
  4. For continued strength, peace, and comfort for my parents.

It is in these trials of life that you realize just how little the materialistic things matter. We are so grateful for our family, and this journey has further strengthened our bond and draw us closer together. And it is by faith that we cling to Christ, as He is more important to us than everything else.

“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever.” (1 Peter 5:6-11)

(A HUGE thank you to Tara for taking the time to write this to share with everyone... love you!)

Happy 4th Birthday Tyson!!

Can't believe our boy is 4 today! He is truly SUCH a great dog, I don't know what we'd do without him!

Top 3 Thursday: Pet Peeves

This week's Top 3 Thursday is on Pet Peeves!
If you know me well you know that it doesn't take much to get on my nerves ... so this is hard to narrow down to only 3!!

1) People who go slow in the fast lane. This drives me NUTS. I am one of those drivers that will flash their lights at you until you move out of the way. I feel like if I just pass them then they'll never learn.

2) People who blame anyone else around them for THEIR failure. Just get over yourself and apologize for messing up. I can't imagine blaming someone else for my mistakes, instead of owning up for my actions.

3) People who bring their unfriendly dogs to the dog park. I swear that dog parks are really just for people who can't have their dog off the leash any other time because they'll go after small children. We have stopped bringing Tyson there because he always comes home with bite marks on his face.

So those are 3 of mine. What are yours?!

Fence Project

This past weekend in Raleigh, the entire Guenther clan (Kyle's whole family) pitched in to help my mom and dad... it meant the world! Since my parents are moving in with my Grandma we had to "dog proof" her backyard. There was no fence or way to get to the backyard easily, so Kyle decided to take charge of this project. He came up with a perfect plan that included a dog door from the garage to outside, putting up the fence and installing the gate! I am so grateful for the fact that when he sees things that need to be done... he gets a plan together and does them immediately!

They all met at my Grandma's house around 8:30 am on Saturday and started building. My dad wanted "deer fencing" which still keeps the dogs in but is very camouflage. After digging all the holes for the t-posts and getting the top cable strung (to keep it from sagging), putting up the actual fence was the easy part!
Here are the ladies minus Kerry. Rachel (w/ baby on the way!), Mrs. G, Grandma and I:
And the finished product! We even left Tyson in there while we went to grab lunch to test it! Mr & Mrs G, Kerry, Brad, Rach and Mike -- my family appreciates your help more than you know!! We can't thank you enough!

So long Levi!

After only 9 short months of fun with Levi, Kyle decided it was time to sell. Kyle and I get pretty attached to cars and are both sad to see Levi go, but that's not to say we'll get another one in a couple years! He was able to complete so many projects on the jeep, and sold Levi for more than we paid to begin with. What a blessing that was!!
We sure have enjoyed riding with the top and doors off around Marietta with Tyson hanging out the back. There is no doubt that the new owner will have the time of his life driving Levi too. So instead of saying "goodbye" we'll just say "so long"... he sure will be missed!

Chicken Bacon stuffed Pizza Rolls!

When Kyle came back from China I wanted something easy to throw in the oven for dinner so we could just spend time catching up. Not to mention any recipe that has Chicken, Bacon and Ranch he just drools over! I had already done the pizza version of this recipe from Best Bites here, and it turned out delicious so I thought I would give this version a try! So here we go:

Chicken-Bacon Stuffed Pizza Rolls
Ingredients:
1 roll refrigerated pizza dough
1 packet Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing mix
2 T grated Parmesan cheese
1 T olive oil or melted butter
sharp cheddar cheese
8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
about 1 C shredded, cooked chicken.
3/4 C mayo
3/4 C milk

Instructions:
First take 1 teaspoon of your ranch dressing mix and combine it with 1 1/2 T Parmesan cheese. Set aside. Combine the remaining ranch mix with 3/4 C mayo and 3/4 C milk and place in the fridge to chill.

Preheat oven to heat specified on pizza dough package. Usually it's 400-425 degrees.

Unroll your pizza dough onto a lightly floured surface. Pat or roll the dough so it's about 12" by 8". You're going to want to cut it into 24 squares, so just eyeball it if you need to. Use a pizza cutter to slice the dough into 24 squares.
Place cheese and desired toppings on each square.

When all of your dough squares have cheese and toppings on them, carefully lift up each square and wrap the dough around the toppings.

Grab the four corners first and then squeeze the seams shut. Then place them seam side down in a lightly sprayed pie pan (or similar sized dish). My dough wasn't real thick in some places, but it still worked for the most part! Brush with melted butter or olive oil and sprinkle with the Parmesan- ranch mixture.
Place your rolls in the oven. Baking time really depends on the type of dough you are using. Set your timer for 10 minutes and check on them after that. They may take up to 15 or 20 to be done. Take them out when they're lightly golden on top.

Serve them warm with a side of freshly made ranch dressing for dipping. I must say this was my first time making HOME MADE ranch dressing and it was DELICIOUS! I felt like such a chef :)

Camping at Red Top Mountain

Last weekend Kyle and I went camping together. We have literally been DYING to get out this year, and we finally had the perfect weather to go. Because of prior obligations we didn't get out there Friday night until 2:00 am, but Kyle had already chosen a camping spot and set up our tent earlier in the day. We went right inside and crashed!

Saturday morning Kyle and I woke up to Tyson growling OUTSIDE the tent. He had somehow unzipped the inside layer of our tent and crawled underneath the rain fly. We couldn't stop laughing... he was just laying outside growling at strangers that went by. Kyle decided to get up and start cooking pancakes while I kept sleeping! Red Top Mountain is one of our favorite "car camping" spots, where you can bring anything you want and pull your car right up to your tent basically. So we had some delicious pancakes and bacon with orange juice! We took a walk around the campground and spotted a couple packing up their tent. Their site was perfect-- right on the water with no other sites around them. Well as soon as they drove out we moved all of our stuff in!!
Tyson absolutely LOVED it. We would lose sight of him for a second then hear a huge splash in the water. He would just swim in circles or go fetch sticks that had floated into the center. It was hilarious.

In the afternoon Kyle and I went mountain biking! It was my first time riding on any kind of gravel, but after a while I got used to it and really enjoyed it. Tyson ran beside us the entire time off leash, and we all had a great time. We're both excited to add mountain biking to our list of activities we can do together!
We read books, talked and sat in the hammock for the rest of the afternoon. After hot dogs & mac and cheese we took another walk around the campground and then turned in early!
Sunday morning we woke up and ate bacon and eggs for breakfast! YUM! We let Tyson play in the water a little more, then it was time to pack up. I had to include this picture of Kyle "bird watching" though. I am forever kidding him because he LOVES to point out birds to me when we are in the car... and I could truly care less. I couldn't stop laughing when he pulled out his binoculars and started looking around the campsite for any kind of bird. I literally was so excited to secretly get it on camera. hahaha
We had such a relaxing time out there together. What a perfect way to spend the weekend!
