Guest Bedroom Project!

We literally have everything ready for Emery's arrival (YEAH!), so we've been keeping ourselves busy with a couple more projects around our house that had been on our to-do list for a while!

Since the guest bedroom is officially down in the basement now, we wanted to set up a tv for our guests on our bookshelves.  Kyle remembered when him and my dad had built this room in the first place that he could access the tv cable right above the bookshelves.  

So this is how I found him one night.  HAHAHA

YES his arm is completely inside the ceiling.  The access panel that was right there was only big enough for one arm.  So needless to say it was a frustrating process trying to split cables with one hand.  He worked for a while like this, I can't believe his arm didn't fall asleep!  BUT he did it, so that way we could secretly hide all the wires behind the shelves instead of having it run across the floor.

The next snag, was that the only tv that we had left was one that was too big to sit in our built-in bookshelves.  So Kyle being handy as ever, measured out the tv and built a custom shelf for the tv to sit on.  We added trim around the bottom, painted it, and screwed it into place.

We still have to figure out the extension cord and tv cable, most likely they'll come out from the top of that cabinet and be hidden as well.  Please ignore the dust on the tv :)

So these are how our built ins look now.  Pretty crowded but since I had to empty out my craft closet to be the guest closet this will do.  I have all my sewing and crafts on one side and my stationary and printing stuff on the other.

Congratulations to Holly & Chris!

Our friends, Holly & Chris, had their baby girl, Bella Rose on Thursday morning! 

Holly delivered on at 2:36am, weighing 7lbs 7 oz, and measuring 19 inches!

Congratulations you two we are so happy for you!

38 Weeks!

14 days till our due date and only 6 more days of work! Oh my goodness time is flying by and we are progressing (check notes section below!)

**For those of you who we called/texted in a panic yesterday for advice, Kyle has officially decided NOT to go to Puerto Rico today.  His boss was so understanding, and we just didn't want to chance Kyle not being here if I were to go into labor.  Our doctor will be relieved I'm sure! **

How Far Along: 38 weeks!
(Your baby has really plumped up. She has a firm grasp, which you'll soon be able to test when you hold her hand for the first time! Her organs have matured and are ready for life outside the womb. Wondering what color your baby's eyes will be? You may not be able to tell right away. If she's born with brown eyes, they'll likely stay brown. If she's born with steel gray or dark blue eyes, they may stay gray or blue or turn green, hazel, or brown by the time she's 9 months old. That's because a child's irises (the colored part of the eye) may gain more pigment in the months after she's born, but they usually won't get "lighter" or more blue. (Green, hazel, and brown eyes have more pigment than gray or blue eyes.)

Size of baby: Around 6.8 pounds and 20 inches. (Like a leek)

Total Weight Gain/Loss: I gained 2 pound this week, so I've officially hit 30 pounds up.  The big 3-0... 

 
Gender: A Sweet Baby GIRL!!  Emery Katherine!

Movement: All the time but she has totally run out of room.  My stomach is hard as a rock everywhere now!

What I miss: Being able to sit up from a reclining position, it's so hard!

Sleep: Sleeping GREAT and am so thankful for this!

Symptoms: Acid reflux (like I can't even bend over without feeling it burn!), tight lower back and heels hurting if I'm on my feet a lot.  The sharp nerve pain coming out of my groin down my inner thigh is happening more frequently too even when I'm sitting.

Notes:  We went to my doctors appointment yesterday and I have progressed!  I am now 50% effaced and almost 2 cm dilated. Kyle and I have both predicted from the start that she was going to come early, so we'll see!  I still don't think that I have felt any contractions yet but she thinks that I have definitely had some braxton hicks.  Belly button is still holding tight as an innie and no stretch marks yet. 

"To-do" items checked off our list: 
- Kyle's and my hospital bags are packed!
- Carseat is inspected
- Nurses goodie bags are packed
- All thank you notes have been written and sent out today!
- FINALLY nailed down a pediatrician
- Completely filled out Emery's baby book as much as we can (until the birth page).  Love it!

Cravings: Chocolate covered strawberries (I made them last weekend!), chips, nachos, really anything salty.  Kyle thinks it's hilarious that I'm hungry all the time.

Best Moments this week: Spending quality time with Ky over last weekend and getting the final things done on our list!

What we are looking forward to:  Another relaxing weekend in town!

Wordless Wednesday: Goodie Bags for the Nurses -- Check!

Practicing!

Last night, we finally had the time to go over together what I learned in our Newborn Basics Class.  I was sad Kyle had to miss it last week, but I took lots of notes and he got the 15 minute version of class instead of 3 hours!  I think it is absolutely adorable that Kyle wanted to hold a "mini session" to practice before Emery comes.  Oh man I love him :)

First we went over the steps that our teacher said for the sponge bath.  Then was diapering!

What's hilarious to us is that this stuffed animal was the first present that Kyle ever gave me for my 18th birthday.  Never did we think we would be practicing diapering on it 9 years down the road :)

Next was getting her clothed and ready for bed.  You can tell we were laughing at ourselves through this entire process.

And then swaddled and in her crib!

(All you pro swaddlers out there don't judge... I taught him the wrong way at first and didn't get a picture of it the second time around!)

I give him an A+ for sure. We are SO EXCITED to meet Emery!

Fun with Friends

We hope you all had wonderful weekends!  Ours flew by, but was filled with good friends, good food, relaxation time, and a little productivity as well on our to-do list!  All around it was perfect, we are so enjoying being in town with no huge projects going on!

Saturday night we had 3 couples over for dinner and it was so much fun.  Kyle graciously cleaned our house all afternoon while I tried out one of my friend Jen's recipes, Baked Ziti, with salad and bread for dinner and one of my sister's recipes, Apple Crisp, for dessert.  It was all so delicious, and I even have a baked ziti ready to go in the freezer for Kyle and I after Emery comes!

No one had seen our bathroom project or the nursery yet, so we also showed them all that and then caught up talking.  Jen and Chris announced that they are expecting a little girl as well, so we really had all stages of life there!  A really fun night for sure, thank you all for coming over!

Girl Time!

Yesterday, our department at work had a bonding outing and it was so much fun.  We do this a couple times a year, our last one was when we went to the corn maze.  Anyways, they were all sweet enough to bump up our outing so I could attend, since I only have 2 more weeks of work before I am out on maternity leave. (WHAT?!)

We headed to our FAVORITE Italian restaurant, Ippolitos (Tara we are definitely taking you here when you come!).  I think I ate the largest meal of my entire pregnancy, and it was amazing.  After lunch it was time to get our nails done!  Donna, Jen and I all chose to get pedicures and Lacey chose a manicure.  It was such a treat to sit in the massaging chairs, while getting your feet pampered!  Especially since I can't paint my toe nails right now even if I wanted to!  I took all these pictures with my phone, but they still document the day well!

 

At one point we looked over and Lacey was wrapped up like she had 2 broken arms.  Hilarious!

I am so thankful to work for such a great company that encourages bonding activities.  Most importantly I have an unbelievable boss and get to work with my some of my best friends... can't complain!

37 Week Survey

WE ARE FULL TERM!!!  YESSSSSSSS!

How Far Along: 37 weeks!

(Your baby is now considered "full term," even though your due date is three weeks away. If you go into labor now, her lungs will likely be mature enough to fully adjust to life outside the womb.  Many babies have a full head of hair at birth, with locks from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches long. But don't be surprised if your baby's hair isn't the same color as yours. Dark-haired couples are sometimes thrown for a loop when their children come out as blonds or redheads, and fair-haired couples have been surprised by Elvis look-alikes. And then, of course, some babies sport only peach fuzz.)

Size of baby: Around 20 inches long and weighs 6 1/3 pounds (a stalk of Swiss Chard?) 

 

Total Weight Gain/Loss: I gained 1 pound this week, so I'm up 28 pounds.  I haven't stressed at all about my weight this entire pregnancy and I'm very proud of myself for how steady I've been able to gain.

Gender: A Sweet Baby GIRL!!  Emery Katherine!

Movement: All the time, more just rolling and adjusting her position though.  It's so fascinating to me to watch my stomach move around and see lumps stick up in certain places.  One morning Kyle leaned over and kissed my stomach saying good morning to Emery, and just at that moment she kicked so hard right in that spot-- essentially kicking Kyle right in the mouth.  It was so funny.

What I miss: Being active without getting tired!

Sleep: Sleeping GREAT!  I'm definitely more tired lately, and am trying to get as much sleep as I can!

Symptoms: Left rib pain, acid reflux, tight lower back and heels hurting if I'm on my feet a lot.  The sharp nerve pain coming out of my groin down my inner thigh is happening more frequently too even when I'm sitting.  It only lasts a second though so no big deal.

Notes: Still no braxton hicks contractions.  Belly button is still holding tight as an innie and no stretch marks yet.  I went to the doctor this morning and I am still at 1 cm, which is actually great news since Kyle is traveling this week and next week.  So Emery please stay put for one more week so daddy can be there!

"To-do" items checked off our list: 
- Car seat, mirrors, and shade are installed!  We are getting the car seat inspected at an office down the road this weekend as our hospital doesn't offer that when we leave - weird right?  We couldn't find the right latches for the middle seat, so for right now it's on the back passenger side.  If they can show us this weekend how to get it in the middle then we'll switch!

- Had a HUGE shopping trip with Kyle this weekend and bought the rest of our necessities off of our registry with the 15% off coupon (monitor, pack n play sheets, medela stuff, lansinoh stuff, Emery's coming home outfit, nursing bra & pjs for me, burp cloths, gates, etc).  It all added up so fast close to $480!  Luckily with all of our merchandise credit and gift cards we paid a total of $10 out of our pockets.  We truly felt SO BLESSED for our friends who gave us those prepaid cards, what a relief that was.  It's great knowing that we won't have to buy anything else before she comes!

- Washed and put away everything we bought from our shopping trip. 

- Compiled all my hospital lists that I have gotten from friends, books and different websites and have started packing my hospital bag!

- Attended the Breastfeeding class last Thursday with Kyle.  We learned a lot of valuable tips for sure.

- Attended the Newborn Basics class by myself yesterday and had a great time.  It was really funny as we all had to hold babies the entire time.  Since I was the "single mom" in the group I had to find a baby sitter to watch my little girl while I went to the bathroom.  I knew mostly everything she told us but it was wonderful to have a trial run on everything!  Kyle and I are going to go over everything this weekend when he gets back so he can have a trial run too!
- Paid the "global fee" already for my OB so now the only bills we'll have to pay are from the hospital.  Luckily we set up our flex spending early this year so we won't have to pay anything out of pocket.

Cravings: Slushies and Doritos... I finally caved today and bought a bag!

Best Moments this week: Had the most amazing Valentines/ Babymoon weekend with Kyle.  Everything about it was perfect.

What we are looking forward to:  

- ANOTHER weekend in town :)  We really could get used to this, as it's the longest time we've ever stayed in Atlanta in the past 4 years of living here.  I think we are going on 4 weeks in a row!

- Getting our car seat inspected.
- Getting our hospital bags completely packed.

And here is a belly shot.  I'm so pale that my skin is literally translucent and you can see every vein there is.  You can see the difference between now and my 30 week picture here.  Tyson was probably wondering what on earth I was doing.

Our Valentines 2011!

I look forward to Valentines day every year.  Kyle completely takes over and surprises me by cooking something amazing.  (You can see what we did in 2010, 2009, and 2008/2007).  We both wanted this year to be extra special, as it's our last Valentines Day before Emery is born.  I didn't ask any questions and Kyle planned the most wonderful Valentines Day yet.

This past Saturday morning, Kyle's boss Tim stopped by our house to pick up Tyson... that was my first clue that we were doing something over night!  Kyle graciously went to Babies R Us with me (as he knew I wouldn't be able to relax until this was checked off the list) and we used our 15% off coupon to buy the necessities that we still needed off of our registry (more on this in another post).  Around 3:00 we packed our bags (Kyle told me what to bring) and headed out.  He kept joking like "bring your passport we're headed on an Alaskan cruise-- I let him know that my doctor probably wouldn't like that idea ha).  Before we got in the car he gave me a beautiful long stemmed rose to set the mood for our "love day" as we referred to it the entire time :)

 

I then saw how our GPS was leading us downtown, so Kyle caved and told me that we were headed to one of the nicest hotels in Atlanta... THE RITZ CARLTON!  I have never stayed in one before, and was blown away by the beautiful flower arrangements and the customer service.  UNBELIEVABLE!

Our room was beautiful.  It's always such a treat for Kyle and I to sleep in a king sized bed and get to sleep in with no animals waking us up!  Lately my "to-do" lists are a little out of control, so Kyle knew that for me to be able to sleep in, he had to take me away from the house.  And he was completely right!

Kyle planned ahead and brought a cooler with Sparkling Grape Juice, Strawberrys, chocolate and other treats.  What a sweetie!!

Once settled in our room, he told me our plan for the night.  We had reservations at 6:00 for Morton's  Steakhouse, which was right down the street.  After dinner we were heading to Peter Pan, showing in the 360 Theater which is a traveling one set up right next to the Coke Museum, which was again right down the street. He also gave me a small part of a present that I'm going to receive after Emery is born.  It's sentimental and I absolutely love it.

We drank some of our sparkling grape juice and got dressed for dinner.  This was our self timer photo from the night.

To say our meals at Morton's were amazing, is an understatement.  We had filet sandwiches as an appetizer, Filet Oscar (me) and NY Strip (Kyle) with a side of mashed potatoes for dinner, and a NY cheesecake slice with carmel drizzled on top - flown in from the Bronx that morning - for dessert.  We both waddled out of there as our bellies were STUFFED.  Luckily I brought a huge purse that fit our leftovers in it, but Kyle kept laughing because I smelled like steak and potatoes the rest of the night.

Kyle had found the Peter Pan tickets on Craigslist, and we ended up sitting right next to the lady who he bought them from.  That show was SO COOL, I would definitely recommend it.  The seats completely surround the stage and the projection behind the seats make it seem like the characters are truly flying.  It's hard to explain,  Click here to watch the video.

Love downtown at night!

At intermission they had a "candy shop" where you could fill up a bucket with as much candy as could fit in there for a certain price.  Needless to say Kyle and I bought that!  We also tried to get a real picture but the camera was still set on self timer so we were laughing the entire time while the poor man waited for the camera to take a picture.

We walked back to our hotel and crashed.  It had been a long day for sure!  I slept so hard that I didn't even wake up once to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, now how is that for some deep sleep!

Sunday morning we lazily woke up, and headed to breakfast.  Kyle had purchased the package that included breakfast for the next morning, so that was a treat to be able to have another big meal!  Before we got dressed though we had to take a picture in our robes.  Silly as it may seem, Kyle and I love putting on the robes that hotels give you.

And now 4 years later with a baby on the way.  So exciting!

Our checkout was at 12:00, so sadly we had to leave.  One cool thing that I forgot to mention was that the entire Carolina Hurricanes Hockey team was staying at our hotel since they were playing the Thrashers that night.  We saw them around the entire time, and even got to talk to one in the elevator which was cool.

What an amazing Valentines Day celebration planned solely by Kyle to let me know how much he loves and appreciates me.  I've never doubted his feelings for me, but I am so grateful to be married to a man that loves to show it in actions.  Happy Valentines Day Ky!

Pinning Surgery for dad today -- WITH UPDATE!

UPDATE!!
Thank you all so much for your sweet comments and prayers yesterday for my dad and our family.  The surgery ended up going very well.  It took a little longer than expected as Dad's bones were harder than they thought and it slowed the drilling time (normally it's elderly who get this surgery with soft bones).  The doctor decided to go ahead and put the longer size rod (15 inch!) in place down the femur to make sure they'll never have to go in and do this surgery again.  Dad's pain level is manageable and they are hoping he'll be up moving around today.  We appreciate your continued prayers for his recovery over the next couple of weeks!  (Click here to read his blog update)


ORIGINAL POST:
Happy Valentines day everyone!  My parents will be spending their romantic day in the hospital, as my dad goes into surgery this afternoon around 2:00.  Now that the doctors have his multiple myelma under control, it's time to start concentrating on the other areas of his body that were severely effected by the cancer.   Last April, they found a one inch hole in the top of dad's femoral neck, which means he's at a risk for a hip replacement or femur fracture.  So today he's getting his femur "pinned" to give him stability while his body over the next couple of years will try to rebuild that area.

He checks in at 12:00 pm, and then we are thinking will begin surgery around 2.  It is a fairly routine surgery, so he should be out around 3:30 or 4.  They'll stay in the hospital for a couple days, and then can continue recovering from home.  We appreciate your prayers more than you know for everything to go smoothly, including dad's recovery for the weeks following!!  (To read more about his surgery you can click here to read his blog)

Emery's Nursery is finished!

It's such a great feeling to finally be done in the nursery, not only with decorating but having everything washed and organized!  Pictures don't do it justice, so you'll just have to come visit and see it yourself :)

View from the door... looks a little crowded but once in the room you have plenty of space!

I love how the strip turned out behind the crib!  Lacey and I painted the wall white, then on the edges painted light aqua dots.  I think it frames the artwork perfectly and adds a lot of height to the room!

At some point we are going to put Emery's newborn photos in these frames.  But until then I had to come up with another solution!  I made little animals that each begin with a letter of Emery's initials.  So left to right it's: E for Elephant, K for Kangaroo, and G for Giraffe  (EKG = Emery Katherine Guenther).  I really like how they turned out!

I was so excited to be able to put up the curtains that we ordered from my "sister in law" Allison!  They turned out just beautiful!!

The material has an earthy feel to it which I love, and then the edging has all these fun puff balls of matching thread to make it girly.  Love the pleats at the top!

I finally found a side table for next to the glider.  It'll be nice to have something to hold a drink, phone, lamp, etc on!

In the corner that you can't see is the armoire!  I was so excited that we were able to reuse this for the nursery instead of buying another piece of furniture, and it matches great!  We have it completely stuffed with clothes, can't wait to put Emery in them!

Here is what the changing table looks like.  We are still debating what to put on the shelf but for now this is how it's looking!  Love that we found a spot for Emery's name banner!

We bought cabinet knobs and screwed them into the wall to hold the banner.  Love it!

      We couldn't be more happy with how everything looks.  Yeah for being done a month early!

36 Week Baby Survey!

How Far Along: 36 weeks!

(Your baby is still packing on the pounds — at the rate of about an ounce a day. She's shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered her body as well as the vernix caseosa, the waxy substance that covered and protected her skin during her nine-month amniotic bath. Your baby swallows both of these substances, along with other secretions, resulting in a blackish mixture, called meconium, will form the contents of her first bowel movement.)

Size of baby: Around 20 inches long and weighs 6 pounds (a crenshaw melon) 

Total Weight Gain/Loss: I gained 1.5 pounds this week, so I'm up 27 pounds.

Gender: A Sweet Baby GIRL!!  Emery Katherine!

Movement: Still all the time, but I can tell she's getting more crammed in there.  The doctor this week said she's DEFINITELY HEAD DOWN-- YES!!

What I miss: Being active, able to breathe and having more energy at night.

Sleep: Still sleeping fantastic, I feel really blessed about this!

Symptoms: Left rib pain, acid reflux and a tight lower back if I'm on my feet a lot.  I've been very emotional this week too, my hormones must be changing like crazy.  We were watching American Idol one night and I looked at Kyle and just started crying.  There was absolutely nothing wrong, I just felt like I needed to cry for some reason.  WEIRD.  Also I've been getting a sharp nerve pain coming out of my groin down my inner thigh.  It's impossible to walk when it happens so I just stop, stretch and then it goes away.

Notes: Had a wonderful doctors appointment yesterday.  I think the most exciting news is that I am 1 cm dilated!  I know you can stay like that for a while, but since I haven't felt any braxton hicks yet it was exciting to find out that my body is preparing.  My blood pressure was 112/70 which is great news and her heart beat was in the 140's like usual. The Dr. tested for Strep B as well this week.

- Bathroom project is officially done!

- Nursery is officially decorated and organized-- a huge thank you to mom!  (Hung curtains, frames, shelving, name banner, organized closet and baskets, and washed clothes)
- Bassinet, pack n play, swing, and bouncy seat are built!

- Diaper bag is packed -- working on the hospital bag this weekend!

Cravings: Slushies are the biggest craving, maybe since they freeze my throat and help me not feel the burn from acid reflux!

Best Moments this week: Having mom in town and going to my Georgia Shower!  What a great weekend it was.  AND our bathroom project is FINALLY done so Kyle and I can officially relax!

What we are looking forward to:  

- Our breastfeeding class tonight.  We also have our newborn basics class this coming Tuesday, but unfortunately Kyle has to travel so I will be going by myself and taking lots of notes for the both of us!

- Going and buying the few necessities at BRU and Target that we still need.  There are not many things, and we are so grateful for that!!

- Getting our car seat & bases installed and checked this weekend. 

- Valentines day celebration!  Kyle has something up his sleeve, I just know it :)

Mom's Visit to ATL!

This year as an early birthday present to mom, my entire family chipped in to buy her a flight to come down and spend a weekend with Kyle and I before Emery comes.  We surprised her with the news last time we were home, and we've all been looking so forward to it!

I picked her up Friday around lunch, and brought her to Jasons Deli, a sandwich place that she had never been to before.  Then it was time to go back to the house to start being productive!  In just an hour or so we were able to build the pack-n-play, bouncy seat, and a side table from Target that I had bought.  It was really fun getting to catch up while building, and I think we both surprised our men with how handy we are.  (Although my table has 3 extra screws left over... shoot!)

I even broke out Kyle's drill!

Within 2 minutes of the bouncy seat being put together Elle found a napping spot.  It's covered in foil now, in hopes that she'll learn not to go in that!

We met Kyle at Pappasittos on Friday night, to introduce Mom to the best guacamole she'll ever eat.  She completely agreed and we enjoyed listening to the Mariachi band sing songs like "The Flintstones and Hakunna Mattata".

Saturday morning, Mom and I headed out to Garden Ridge and Michaels to buy frames and the mirror for the new bathroom, while Kyle fixed the leaking toilet.  We rushed home to get ready for the shower, and then spent the afternoon with all my Georgia friends.  Saturday night, we unpacked all the gifts from the shower, put a baby sheets/clothes load in the washer and then started organizing!  Look at the mess we made!

Kyle kept yelling up "okay it's time to relax now", as he wanted some company watching tv.  I think he knows now where I get my "productive-cannot relax until it's clean" genes from :)

Sunday morning, we decided to skip church as mom was leaving the next morning and we still hadn't hung anything in the nursery!  My sister's sister-in-law, Allison, (who I refer to as my sister in law) is an amazing seamstress and made us curtains for the nursery!  We are so happy with them, as they are by far the nicest curtains we've ever owned!  We hung the curtains, frames on the wall behind the crib, then even hung a shelf and Emery's name banner.  I can officially say the nursery is DONE!!  I will be posting pictures of it this week!

We even had some time to go for a long walk on Sunday and then enjoy the super bowl.   The cats thoroughly enjoyed having Mom there, as they've lived at her house at some point or another during the 8 years I've had them.  Elle really loved her cuddle time with mom... Dad you sure you don't want Elle to come live at your house??

Kyle drove mom to the airport Monday morning, while I sat at my desk at work teary eyed.  (I'm a little emotional right now).  I truly am blessed to have a mom who is one of my best friends and that I can count on for anything.  It's such a comfort knowing that she'll be back down in a month when Emery is born to stay with Kyle and I while we are adjusting with a newborn.  Love you mom thank you for everything!
